Do I Have Celiac Disease?
Complete this Celiac Symptoms Checklist

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is often difficult to diagnose. Some people develop symptoms of celiac disease as children. And with others, symptoms don't appear until adulthood. Some of the factors that appear to affect when and how celiac disease first manifests itself include:

  • Breastfeeding. Symptoms tend to appear later in life and are more atypical the longer a person was breastfed.
  • The age when the person began eating foods containing gluten
  • How much gluten was regularly consumed

To complicate matters, the symptoms don't always occur in the digestive system. One patient with celiac disease might have diarrhea and abdominal pain; another could be suffering from depression or irritability (one of the most common symptoms in young children).

And some of those with celiac disease may not have any symptoms at all. Enough of their small intestine remains undamaged and is able to absorb enough nutrients. However, just because a person is symptom-free, it doesn't mean they're not still at risk from the complications of celiac disease.

As you can see, the symptoms of celiac disease vary from individual to individual. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms -- especially over a prolonged period of time -- you may want to consult your doctor and ask about a celiac blood test.

Do you frequently suffer from:

Bloating, gas and/or abdominal pain
Bulky or loose stools
Canker sores
Delayed growth
Diarrhea or constipation
Discolored teeth or loss of enamel
Fatigue
Fractures or thin bones
Irritability or behavior changes
Itchy skin rash
Joint pain
Missed menstrual periods
Poor weight gain
Significant unexplained weight loss
Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
